Your switchboard is where every circuit in the house is protected. If yours still runs ceramic fuses, has no test buttons, or has run out of room for another circuit, it is worth having a licensed electrician look at it properly rather than guessing from a photo.

We upgrade domestic switchboards and sub-boards across the Gold Coast, and we do commercial boards as well. Every job starts the same way: we inspect the existing installation, work out what the board and metering actually need, and quote it in writing before anything starts.

Signs it is worth an assessment

None of these can be diagnosed from a description alone, which is why we look at the installation before we quote.

• Ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
• No test buttons on the board, so no safety switch protection
• The board is full and there is no room for another circuit
• Heat marks, discolouration, buzzing or a burning smell
• Protection that keeps operating, or that has to be reset regularly
• You are adding load: air conditioning, an EV charger, induction cooking, solar or a renovation

Adding load does not automatically mean you need a new board. Capacity, space, mains, earthing and metering all have to be inspected first.

What an upgrade actually changes

• A new enclosure or panel where the existing one cannot be kept
• Main switch and circuit protection replaced
• Every final circuit protected by its own RCBO. That is our standard upgrade design, so each circuit has both overload and safety switch protection, and one fault does not take out the rest of the house
• Every circuit clearly labelled
• Space and capacity built in where the design allows for it
• The affected installation tested, and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance issued
• A safety inspection of the whole home before handover. That is a separate thing from the certificate, and it is included

Safety switch, circuit breaker and RCBO

People use these three names interchangeably. They do different jobs.

Circuit breaker. Protects the wiring and equipment from overload and short circuit. It does not protect a person from an electric shock.

Safety switch, or RCD. Detects current leaking to earth and cuts the power fast enough to protect a person. It is the one that protects people, not wiring.

RCBO. Both jobs in one device, on one circuit. This is what we fit per circuit on an upgrade.

Queensland recommends safety switch protection on all circuits, including lighting, air conditioning, stove, hot water and pool equipment. That is a recommendation for an existing home, not a blanket statement that every older home is unlawful. Your electrician selects protection that suits the circuit and complies with the current Wiring Rules.

Older boards and asbestos

Switchboards and meter panels built before 2004 may contain asbestos backing panels, and it cannot be identified reliably by eye. Our electricians are trained to remove and dispose of small non-friable asbestos panels lawfully, and disposal records are kept. Anything friable, or anything beyond that scope, is referred to a licensed asbestos removalist. If we find it, we will tell you before we go any further.

Meter-ready preparation

If a smart meter is going in, the board usually has to be prepared for it first.

We prepare the customer-owned installation to the current Queensland Electricity Connection Manual and the metering provider requirements, which covers the location, access, space and enclosure. Your electricity retailer arranges the meter and their metering provider installs it. We do not supply or fit the retailer meter, and neither does Energex.

Getting the board work and the meter change sequenced properly is usually the difference between one visit and three.

What happens on the day

1. We confirm the isolation plan with you before anything is switched off, so you know what will be without power and roughly for how long.
2. We protect the work area.
3. The board work is done: enclosure, main switch, circuit protection, RCBOs per circuit.
4. Everything is tested.
5. Every circuit is labelled.
6. We walk you through the finished board, complete the whole-home safety inspection, and hand over your Certificate of Testing and Compliance.

What affects the quote

We do not publish a price for this work, because the honest answer is that it depends on the board in front of us. These are the things that move it:

• How many circuits, and how many are being added
• Whether the existing enclosure can be kept
• Whether an asbestos panel is present
• Where the board is and how accessible it is
• The condition of the mains and earthing
• Any defects found in the existing installation
• Solar, battery, controlled load, EV charging
• Single phase or three phase
• Sub-boards
• Coordination with the distributor or metering provider

Frequently asked questions

What does a switchboard upgrade include?

A new enclosure or panel where the old one cannot be kept, a new main switch and circuit protection, an RCBO on every final circuit, full labelling, testing, a Certificate of Testing and Compliance, and a safety inspection of the whole home before handover.

How do I know whether my home needs an upgrade?

The common signs are ceramic fuses, no test buttons, no room left on the board, heat damage, or protection that keeps operating. None of that can be confirmed without an inspection, so we look at the installation before we quote.

Are ceramic fuses illegal in Queensland?

No. An older board with ceramic rewireable fuses is not automatically illegal. The real issue is what they do and do not protect: fuses protect wiring, not people, and incorrect fuse wire can damage wiring or start a fire. We inspect the installation rather than condemning it on age.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker, an RCD and an RCBO?

A circuit breaker protects wiring and equipment. An RCD, or safety switch, protects people from electric shock. An RCBO does both on a single circuit.

Will every circuit have safety switch protection after the upgrade?

Yes. Our standard upgrade design puts every final circuit on its own RCBO.

My old board might have asbestos, can you handle it?
