Backup Power, Generator Inlets and Changeover Switches

Power drops out fast in storm season on the Gold Coast and across SEQ. A generator inlet and changeover switch lets you safely plug in a portable generator and run essential circuits in the house without dragging extension leads through windows and without backfeeding the grid. A licensed electrician in Queensland should install this setup.

WHAT WE DO

Vision Electrical installs domestic generator connection points and changeover switches so you can use a portable generator to power parts of your home during an outage. We set it up in line with AS/NZS 3010 guidance for connecting generating sets to an electrical installation and local supply authority requirements.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. We install a weatherproof generator inlet near your switchboard.

  2. We install a manual changeover switch in or next to the board so you can select mains or generator.

  3. In a blackout, you start the generator, plug into the inlet, select generator on the switch, and the chosen circuits run from the generator.
The changeover switch isolates the generator supply from the network supply and prevents backfeeding.

WHAT YOU CAN POWER

  • Fridge and freezer

  • Some lights and GPOs

  • Internet and security

  • Garage door or gate
Actual loads depend on the size of your generator and the circuits available. We will set it up so the generator is not overloaded.

WHY USE A CHANGEOVER SWITCH

  • Stops dangerous backfeed into Energex or Ergon lines

  • Complies with the Wiring Rules and generator standard for alternate supplies

  • Cleaner and faster than running extension leads everywhere

  • Ready before storms, no rewiring every time you lose power
